Cut to now, and he is the founder and director of Bar Pop – a company specializing in festivals and parties that has been putting Chris’ home city of Perth, Australia, on the map as an exciting place to live and play since 2013.
As one of their flagship brands, carnival weekend Froth Town creates “good times on tap”, celebrating Australian craft beer, booze and food. With live music from world-famous acts, there are also more quirky activities like wrestling, hot dog eating contests and Dad Bod Wet T-shirt competitions.
“Each year I think tops the year before, in terms of the scale and what we deliver,” says Chris. Now he’s setting his sights on growing outside of Perth to make a “national and international product and see if we can deliver that same experience to more and more people”.
“I’d love to go somewhere like London,” he says. “That’s a lofty target, but to get over there and really market ourselves as an Australian product, I think it would be really well received.
”Reflecting on his journey, Chris adds that “starting from the bottom” was pivotal in shaping his approach to running Bar Pop.
“I remember listening to the way senior people around me interacted with others and seeing really good – and some really poor – examples of respect and how to treat people,” he says. “We try to put that into our events and consider how people would like to be treated.”
"The way I see the business would be with some Odessa or Justice, which is a French electronic duo. But electronic music with deep, bottoming-out bass and some big crescendo moments that are dramatic and theatrical."
